Top Dressing
Top dressing involves spreading a thin layer of sand or soil over your turf. There are several reasons why we might do this. We might be looking to introduce a rich, organic soil mixture to a poor sand base that the turf was built on, or we might aim to add a well-draining clay-free sand to a poorly draining area. Where possible, this should be done after aeration so we can fill these vacant cores with our organic or sand mix.
When top dressing, it’s crucial that at least one third of the leaf blade remains above the mixture we’ve added; otherwise, it may smother the turf.
