The role of irrigation in commercial turf

In Perth, irrigation is essential for turf growth; quite simply, there is absolutely nothing that can be done during the summer to ensure the turf survives with the amount of rainfall we receive. In 2024, Perth received approximately 9.4 mm between December and April, while it is estimated that turf requires between 25 and 50 mm per week during the temperatures we experience throughout this period.

Failing to meet these moisture needs causes the leaf blades to wilt and eventually die off, while overwatering encourages a shallow root system. A proper turf program will address moisture requirements while reducing overwatering and saving you money. The exact amount of water needed depends on several factors, such as traffic and soil type. A predominant sand-based soil type absorbs moisture easily but does not retain it, while a clay-based profile holds moisture and prevents it from passing through.

These moisture needs are also based on the proviso that the water is actually reaching the root zone where it can be absorbed. Compaction and excess thatch are two factors that limit this. This is where we introduce a soil wetter application, as a quality product will assist with both the penetration and retention of moisture in the root zone. This soil wetter application is one of the essential building blocks of any turf care program and needs to be done consistently, particularly through spring and summer.
